Fighting Off a Toothache

A toothache can come in many forms — you might have sore gums, sensitive teeth, a tender jaw, or even a throbbing headache. Whatever your symptoms, it’s going to feel pretty uncomfortable and will be caused by something a dentist needs to address. A toothache isn’t a dental issue, it’s a symptom of a dental issue, which is why it needs to be professionally treated. Even if the pain lessens over time, the cause of the pain will still be there and that pesky toothache will probably strike again unless you receive specialised treatment.

So, first thing’s fist; book an appointment with your dentist. They’ll be able to determine the cause of the ache. It might be tooth decay, gum disease, an abscess, a chipped of cracked tooth, grinding teeth, or misaligned teeth. Some of these causes may even require advanced (and expensive) orthodontic treatment if left unchecked.

In the meantime, here are three inexpensive at-home remedies you can use for some short-term relief.

Saltwater

Gargle saltwater. Saltwater helps remove harmful oral bacteria that may be causing the toothache, or appear as a result of the toothache. Depending on the cause, it can reduce swelling and fight infection (if there is one present).

Painkillers

Painkillers can be taken any time of day but are particularly useful if your toothache is making it difficult to sleep. Even over-the-counter medicines, such as Nurofen or Panadol, are perfect for combatting oral discomfort. Only use painkillers as directed — never crush tablets and apply directly to the site of pain as the acidity can damage gum tissue.

Ice

A cold compress against your jaw, lips, or cheek (depending on the site of pain) can help temporarily numb a toothache. As aching teeth are sensitive to extreme temperatures, avoid sucking ice-cubes or applying a compress directly to the teeth or gums — this could actually increase discomfort.

Don’t Put Up With Long-Term Pain

Home remedies provide quick relief, but that relief is temporary. Make sure you visit your dentist as soon as possible so you can receive personalised treatment that eradicates painful toothaches for good.

If you’re based near Midland, you can visit Tom at Crescent Village Dental Centre for toothache treatment, or even just a regular check-up to make sure there aren’t any nasty surprises around the corner.
